The First Vaccine
In 1796, Edward Jenner noticed that milkmaids never had smallpox, and that no one caught smallpox twice. He infected James Phipps with material from a cowpox sore, and then infected him with smallpox. Phipps did not get smallpox, indicating the vaccine's success.
